Russian Arctic Cities in the Context of Climate Change
نویسنده
چکیده
For centuries, humans lived in the Arctic in relatively small, self-sustained communities in harmony with the harsh local climate and environment. In contrast to that earlier period, the modern Russian Arctic is characterized by intensive urban development, including cities whose populations exceed more than 100,000 people. “Urbanization” peaked in the period between the late 1950s and 1980s. During that time, millions of mostly young people, inspired by the nation-wide enthusiasm for ambitious development projects, moved permanently to the North, and many of the small northern villages and compact settlements developed into cities with new types of urban infrastructure and life styles. Most of the northern cities demonstrated high resilience and survived the economic and political collapse of the country in the early 1990s, largely because the well-being of post-Soviet Russia was based on the extraction and exploitation of natural resources from the North (Fig. 1).

Climate change and zoonotic infections in the Russian Arctic
Climate change in the Russian Arctic is more pronounced than in any other part of the country. Between 1955 and 2000, the annual average air temperature in the Russian North increased by 1.2°C. During the same period, the mean temperature of upper layer of permafrost increased by 3°C. Climate change in Russian Arctic increases the risks of the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases. This rev...
متن کاملClimate Change and the Challenges of Quantitative Assessment of Urban Climate Change: A Case Study in Tehran Metropolis
Background and Aim: Climate change on the earth is changing faster than ever before in the history. Cities are highly vulnerable to this climate change. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate climate change in the metropolis of Tehran during the period 1991-2020 and help understand the limitations that cities may have in confronting climate change. Materials and Methods: This descri...
متن کاملClimate Change and Tourism in the Arctic Circle
We estimate grid level tourist numbers to Arctic Circle countries under a number of climate change scenarios. At present, the highest tourism volumes are found in Canada and most of the Scandinavian countries. In general, it appears that tourists are attracted to regions with better infrastructure and nicer cities. Under each climate change scenario, Russia sees a significant increase in touris...

متن کاملNew Trans-Arctic shipping routes navigable by midcentury.
Recent historic observed lows in Arctic sea ice extent, together with climate model projections of additional ice reductions in the future, have fueled speculations of potential new trans-Arctic shipping routes linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, numerical studies of how projected geophysical changes in sea ice will realistically impact ship navigation are lacking. To address this...
